Illustrated Contemplation Journal

7-8 years

Me with Nature

30 min

Learning goal :

Learning to contemplate nature

Pedagogical Intention :

Learning to slow-down and notice

Target skills :

Anchoring a regular contemplation practice. The trace comes after the experience.

Materials :

Blank journal + Pencils and colors

Detailed procedure :

1. Each child receives a personal journal dedicated to nature
2. Outside, they first contemplate in silence what catches their attention
3. Then they write or draw freely - no specific instructions
4. The adult circulates without commenting
5. Optional sharing at the end: read or show one element

Progress Indicators :

Contemplation posture: Lies down or sits quietly outside, eyes open, without adult prompting.
Slowing of the gaze: Follows a slow natural element (cloud, bird, sun) with their eyes without getting up or speaking, until it disappears from view.
Naming a contemplative feeling: Spontaneously expresses a feeling after contemplation.
Grounding and presence in the moment: Closes their eyes or remains still for 2 to 15 minutes (depending on age) without seeking distraction or peer interaction.

Research Foundations :

Reggio Emilia: documentation of experience. / Cornell: observation as a path to wonder.
