Watching Birds in Flight

9-10 years

Me with Nature

30 min

Learning goal :

Learning to contemplate nature

Pedagogical Intention :

Awakening an aesthetic gaze

Target skills :

Developing attention to free and aerial movement. Feeling the lightness and freedom of flight as an inner experience.

Materials :

Outdoor space + Journal and pen for afterwards

Detailed procedure :

1. Settle alone in a quiet space, no materials, just sit and look
2. 15 minutes of silent presence: observe the sky, the trees, the living
3. No note-taking during the silence - just be
4. At the end: write freely what remains inside
5. The question to guide writing: 'What has changed in me during this silence?'

Progress Indicators :

Contemplation posture: Lies down or sits quietly outside, eyes open, without adult prompting.
Slowing of the gaze: Follows a slow natural element (cloud, bird, sun) with their eyes without getting up or speaking, until it disappears from view.
Naming a contemplative feeling: Spontaneously expresses a feeling after contemplation.
Grounding and presence in the moment: Closes their eyes or remains still for 2 to 15 minutes (depending on age) without seeking distraction or peer interaction.
Long-distance vision activated: Focuses on a distant natural element (horizon, sky, distant trees) during contemplation - a sign that long-distance vision is being retrained.
Disconnection ritual: Voluntarily sets aside their materials/screens before going outside and signals they are "ready to look" - an internalized and spontaneous ritual.

Research Foundations :

Cornell, J. : émerveillement et présence. / Young, J. (8 Shields) : langage des oiseaux.
