The Manipulation Playbook - Advanced Threat Detection

Me with (Smart) Objects

12-15 years

Learning goal :

Learning to use AI safely

Pedagogical Intention :

Learning to use AI safely for myself

Target skills :

Develop advanced, practical AI threat detection skills. Build the social skills to support peers who may be manipulated - combining technical literacy with emotional intelligence.

Materials :

Case study dossier: 5 real or reconstructed manipulation scenarios involving AI + Detection Checklist + Access to an AI image analysis tool

Detailed Procedure :

1. Students receive a dossier of 5 scenarios: (a) AI-generated romantic companion used to extract money, (b) deepfake video of a school principal used for cyberbullying, (c) AI-generated social media influencer promoting supplements, (d) AI-personalized phishing email using details from the target's social media, (e) AI-generated peer pressure in a gaming environment. 2. For each: identify the manipulation technique, the psychological vulnerability exploited, the AI technology used, and the detection method. 3. Class builds a master Detection Checklist, organized by manipulation type. 4. Role-play (pairs): one student plays the target, one plays a friend who suspects manipulation. Practice the conversation: 'I think what you've been talking to might not be real. Here's why.' 5. Each student writes a brief guide for a younger sibling on AI manipulation risks.

Progress Indicators

Student correctly identifies the manipulation technique, vulnerability, and detection method for all 5 scenarios. The guide for a younger sibling is accurate, specific, age-appropriate, and practical - not generic.
