DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "Saying no in a friendship isn't rejection. Often, it's the thing that makes the friendship sustainable."

Step 1

Use these scenarios: always saying yes because you're afraid of losing the friendship / agreeing to things that cost you and building resentment / a 'no' that saved a friendship from burnout.

Step 2

Discussion: what happens to friendships where one person never says no? (Imbalance, resentment, eventual rupture).

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "A friendship built on you always saying yes is not a friendship - it's a service arrangement."

Step 4

Reflection: which friendship in your life could use an honest 'no' right now?

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child explains how 'no' protects a friendship in 3 scenarios.

The child identifies one friendship where resentment has built from too many 'yeses.'

The child delivers one honest 'no' this week.
