DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "The hardest forgiveness in your life will probably involve a close friend - because the closer someone is, the more they can hurt you."

Step 1

Case studies: a best friend who shared your secret / a close friend who turned others against you / a friend who lied repeatedly.

Step 2

Explore: is forgiveness appropriate? Is reconciliation separate from forgiveness? What conditions would need to be met for reconciliation to be worth trying?

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "Forgiving a friend doesn't mean the friendship is automatically restored. It means you're releasing the poison - for your own sake."

Step 4

Personal readiness tracker: where are you in forgiving someone who really hurt you?

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child accurately distinguishes forgiveness from reconciliation in 3 scenarios.

The child assesses their own forgiveness readiness with specificity.

The child identifies conditions under which reconciliation would be appropriate.
