DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "The person many people find hardest to forgive is themselves. But self-forgiveness is one of the most important things you can do."

Step 1

Discuss: what does it look like when someone can't forgive themselves? (Rumination, self-attack, withdrawal, trying too hard to compensate).

Step 2

Self-compassion break (Neff): mindfulness (this is a moment of suffering) + common humanity (everyone makes mistakes) + self-kindness (I can treat myself kindly here).

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "You are not the worst thing you've ever done. And the cruelest voice in your life shouldn't be your own."

Step 4

Journal: practice self-forgiveness for one past mistake - write the 3-step compassion break.

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child completes a self-compassion break accurately for a real mistake.

The child identifies the difference between self-forgiveness and excuse-making.

The child reports reduced rumination after applying self-compassion.
