DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "Some conversations are too hard to have face-to-face - at first. Writing can be the first step."

Step 1

Use these types of letters: appreciation (expressing genuine gratitude to someone) / apology (taking full responsibility in writing) / unfinished conversation (saying what you never got to say) / unsent (writing to process, not to deliver).

Step 2

The unsent letter is a regulation tool - full honesty, no consequences.

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "Writing what you feel gives you control over the conversation - and often clarity you didn't have before."

Step 4

Each student writes one letter of their choice. Sharing is never required.

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child writes a genuine letter in one of the 4 categories.

The child distinguishes letters meant to be sent from processing letters.

The child reports increased clarity about a relationship after writing.
