Not Everything That Feels Like an Emergency Is One

12-15 years

Me with Others

25 min / 2x per week

Learning goal :

Developing Emotional Awareness When Interacting with Others

Pedagogical Intention :

Managing My Emotions When Interacting with Others

Target skills :

Emotional intensity calibration, Proportionality assessment, De-escalation of catastrophizing

Materials :

Emotional intensity calibration tool, crisis/non-crisis distinction scenarios

Detailed procedure :

1. Introduction: "Adolescent brains are wired for intensity. The emotional volume is turned up - which makes difficult things feel unbearable and good things feel ecstatic. The calibration skill is knowing when your intensity is proportionate."
2. Teach the intensity calibration question: on a scale of 1–10, how intense is this feeling? On a scale of 1–10, how serious is the actual situation? If they're mismatched, the emotion is informing you - but it's not an accurate report on the situation.
3. Apply to common adolescent scenarios: being left on read / a friend not inviting you somewhere / a misunderstood text.
4. Script: "Feeling something intensely doesn't mean the situation is proportionately serious. Your emotion is real. The narrative you're building around it might not be."
5. Practice: calibrate 5 scenarios.

Progress Indicators :

Applies the intensity calibration tool to 5 scenarios accurately. Identifies 2 personal situations where their intensity was disproportionate. Reports using calibration in a real social situation.

Research Foundations :

Steinberg (2005); Linehan (1993); Brackett (2019)
