6-8 years

Me with Others

20 min / 2x per week

Learning goal :

Developing My Human-Human Co-Intelligence

Pedagogical Intention :

Setting Fair, Equitable, and Respectful Rules

Target skills :

Fairness vs. equality, Equity thinking, Needs-based justice

Materials :

Fairness vs. equality illustration (3 people, 1 fence), scenario cards

Detailed procedure :

1. Introduction: "Equality means everyone gets the same. Fairness means everyone gets what they need."
2. Show the classic illustration: 3 people of different heights behind a fence. Equality = same box. Equity = different boxes so all can see.
3. Discussion: is it fair for everyone to get the same amount of help? The same rules?
4. Script: "Treating everyone exactly the same is sometimes the most unfair thing you can do."
5. Apply to class scenarios: is this rule fair for everyone? Does anyone need something different?

Progress Indicators :

Distinguishes equality from fairness with examples. Applies equity thinking to class scenarios. Proposes a needs-based adjustment to an existing rule.

Research Foundations :

Piaget (1932); Kohlberg (1969); Rawls (1971)
