DETAILED PROCEDURE
This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "Listening in conflict fails not because you stop hearing words but because you stop being genuinely open. You start building your defense while they're still talking."
Step 1
Identify personal defensive listening triggers: feeling blamed / feeling mischaracterized / feeling attacked as a person / being accused of something that doesn't match your intention.
Step 2
Open-listening practice: when a trigger fires → notice it → breathe → let them finish completely → check if you understood before responding.
Step 3
Say gently to the child: "You cannot listen and defend at the same time. Choose one."
Step 4
Role play: have a difficult conversation while applying open-listening despite personal triggers.
