DETAILED PROCEDURE
This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "Full NVC is one of the most powerful communication tools ever developed. Let's master all 4 components."
Step 1
Review and deepen each component:
Step 2
Observation: factual, no evaluation ('When you didn't respond to my text for 2 days...').
Step 3
Feeling: emotion, not thought ('...I felt worried and confused...').
Step 4
Need: universal human need ('...because I value connection and knowing we're okay...').
Step 5
Request: specific, doable, not a demand ('...could you let me know when you see my messages, even just a thumbs up?').
Step 6
Step 7
The demand test: a request leaves the other person free to say no. A demand doesn't.
Step 8
Say gently to the child: "When you make a request instead of a demand, you're treating the other person as someone with choices - not someone you control."
Step 9
Apply to 5 real or simulated conflict situations.
Step 10
PROGRESS INDICATORS
The child constructs a full 4-component NVC message for 5 scenarios.
The child identifies and revises hidden demands in requests.
The child reports receiving notably more cooperative responses when using full NVC.
