The Most Underrated Leadership Decision

12-15 years

Me with Others

25 min / 2x per week

Learning goal :

Developing My Human-Human Co-Intelligence

Pedagogical Intention :

Choosing My Role in the Group

Target skills :

Lead-follow-step aside decision-making, Situational leadership wisdom, Ego-free role choice

Materials :

Role-choice decision framework, stepping aside practice scenarios

Detailed procedure :

1. Introduction: "Knowing when to lead is important. Knowing when to follow is equally important. Knowing when to step aside - because someone else is better positioned - is the rarest and most mature leadership capacity."
2. Decision framework: Am I the best person for this role? / Who is better positioned? / What does the group need most right now? / What does stepping aside make possible?
3. Stepping aside scenarios: a team member has more expertise / a person from an affected community should be centered / the group needs a different energy.
4. Script: "Stepping aside is not failure. It is the leadership move that most leaders are never willing to make."
5. Practice: identify one real situation this week where stepping aside is the wisest leadership choice.

Progress Indicators :

Applies the decision framework to 5 leadership choice scenarios. Identifies one real situation where stepping aside is appropriate. Steps aside intentionally in one real group context.

Research Foundations :

Greenleaf (1977); Goleman (1995); Freire (1970)
