Power vs. reactivity analysis

DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "At your age, social cruelty is often strategic - designed to destabilize you, get a reaction, or demonstrate power. Reacting on their terms gives them exactly what they want."

Step 1

Distinguish: reactive response (gives away your power) vs. powerful response (keeps your power - calm, clear, non-escalating).

Step 2

Use these types of powerful responses: the non-reaction / the brief clear statement / the redirection / the public naming without aggression.

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "When someone is trying to use your reaction against you, the most powerful thing you can do is not give it to them."

Step 4

Role play: respond to escalating social cruelty with increasingly powerful (not reactive) responses.

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child distinguishes reactive from powerful responses for 5 cruelty scenarios.

The child maintains non-reactive power through 4 escalation rounds in a role play.

The child reports one real situation where they chose a powerful non-reactive response.
