The Whole Truth, With Care
12-15 years
Me with Others
25 min / 2x per week
Learning goal :
Developing My Ability to Communicate Harmoniously with Others
Pedagogical Intention :
Putting My Feelings into Words Without Hurting Others
Target skills :
Full-truth communication, Emotional honesty in intimacy, Comfortable dishonesty recognition
Materials :
Emotional complexity expression worksheet, full-truth communication protocol
Detailed procedure :
1. Introduction: "In close relationships, partial truths are a form of dishonesty - and they accumulate. 'I'm fine' when you're not. 'It doesn't matter' when it does. Over time, these partial truths create distance that feels mysterious."
2. Full-truth communication: what is the full emotional reality? (Not just the comfortable part) → who needs to know this? → how do I say all of it with care?
3. Distinguish: full truth (complete and kind) vs. brutal honesty (complete but unkind) vs. comfortable dishonesty (kind but incomplete).
4. Script: "People in close relationships can always feel partial truths. They just don't know what they're missing."
5. Practice: say the full truth about a situation (role play) without softening it into dishonesty or sharpening it into cruelty.
Progress Indicators :
Distinguishes full truth, brutal honesty, and comfortable dishonesty in 5 scenarios. Delivers a full truth in a role play that is complete and kind. Reports one real full-truth communication this week.
Research Foundations :
Brown (2010); Rogers (1951); Rosenberg (2003)
