DETAILED PROCEDURE

Gather the whole group together in a circle for this activity. Explain calmly to the children: "When everyone around you thinks one thing, it takes real courage to think differently - even when you're right."

Step 1

Describe (age-appropriately) Asch's conformity experiment: most people change their answer to match the group even when they're clearly right.

Step 2

Discussion: when have you changed what you said - or didn't say - because of the group?

Step 3

Say gently to the children: "Your opinion is most valuable when it's truly yours - not a copy of whoever spoke first."

Step 4

Practice: take a position before hearing the group, then compare.

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child maintains their original position despite group pressure in 2/3 trials.

The child identifies a moment of past conformity honestly.

The child states a position before hearing peers in a discussion.
