DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "One of the least-practiced forms of empathy at your age is empathy for adults - especially the adults who frustrate or confuse you."

Step 1

Reverse empathy mapping: for a parent, teacher, or other adult whose behavior confuses or frustrates you - what might they be feeling? What pressures do they carry that you can't fully see?

Step 2

Explore: what is it like to be responsible for someone's well-being? To watch someone you love struggle and feel powerless? To see the long arc of decisions when you can only see the present?

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "Understanding why someone acts the way they do doesn't mean you have to agree with it. But it often changes the conversation."

Step 4

Practice: write a short empathy map for one adult in your life.

Step 5

Step 6

Step 7

Step 8

Step 9

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child writes an empathy map for an adult that reveals new understanding.

The child identifies 2 pressures adults carry that they hadn't previously considered.

The child reports one conversation that went differently after applying cross-generational empathy.
