DETAILED PROCEDURE
This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "Empathy isn't only for people you know personally. The same skill that helps you understand a friend can help you understand why people who have never met you struggle in ways you don't."
Step 1
Case studies: students who can't afford field trips / students who face bias in how they're treated / families new to the country navigating unfamiliar systems.
Step 2
Empathy-action bridge: understand the experience → identify what you can actually do (however small).
Step 3
Say gently to the child: "Empathy without action is just a feeling. Empathy with action is a force."
Step 4
Design: one small concrete action each student can take that responds to a systemic inequity they've identified.
