DETAILED PROCEDURE

This activity works best one-on-one, or with one child at a time within a small group. Explain calmly to the child: "There will be moments in your life when someone with authority over you asks you to do something that violates your values. Knowing how to say no - clearly, on principle, without losing everything - is a life skill."

Step 1

Distinguish: rebellious refusal (emotional, unfocused) from principled dissent (calm, values-based, with a clear explanation).

Step 2

Principled dissent structure: name the request clearly / state your objection on principled grounds / propose an alternative if possible / accept the consequences.

Step 3

Say gently to the child: "Principled dissent says: 'I respect your authority and I cannot do what you're asking because it conflicts with my values.'"

Step 4

Role play: practice principled dissent with a teacher, parent, coach, or employer scenario.

Step 5

Step 6

Step 10

PROGRESS INDICATORS

The child distinguishes rebellious refusal from principled dissent with examples.

The child applies the 4-step dissent structure in a role play.

The child accepts consequences of principled dissent without retaliation or collapse.
