Learning goal :
Developing Emotional Awareness When Interacting with Others
Pedagogical Intention :
Identifying My Emotions When Interacting with Others
Target skills :
Loyalty conflict emotion literacy, Competing values awareness, Multi-party emotional mapping
Materials :
Loyalty conflict vignettes, emotion mapping worksheet
Detailed procedure :
1. Introduction: "One of the hardest social situations at your age is when two people you care about are in conflict - and both want your loyalty."
2. Vignettes: two best friends have a falling out and each wants you on their side / you know something about a friend that could hurt another friend / a friend is being treated unfairly by a teacher you also respect.
3. Map the emotions: what do you feel toward each person? What do you feel about yourself in this situation?
4. Script: "Loyalty conflicts create emotions that have no clean name - guilt, torn-ness, helplessness. Naming them is the first step."
5. Explore: what values are in tension? (loyalty, honesty, fairness, kindness)
Progress Indicators :
Names 3+ emotions felt in a loyalty conflict situation. Identifies the competing values at stake. Articulates the difference between loyalty and dishonesty.
